Photographer Masayuki Shioda has a solo exhibition “Retinagazer” at Taka Ishii gallery Photography/ Film until September 26th. This, his first solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Photography/Film, shows about 110 pieces from his vast collection of pictures taken over the last 24 years.
Shioda began as a photographer in the late 1990s and works mainly with musicians, including Shintaro Sakamoto and Jim O’Rourke. In parallel with his work as a writer, he hosted a monthly group show, 35MINUTESMEN, at Arai Yakushi, Tokyo from April 2009 to March 2010. In addition, his independent publishing label, FLASH BOOKS, published an anthology of his work and the magazine Modern-n, which was first published in 2019, published YAKITORI TELLER, a documentary following the photographer, Juergen Teller.
This exhibition displays snapshots from one album taken over four years based around the DOGOOHAIR (2004) collection which considers the relationship between images and large monochrome copies of representative images from the same series. There are also snapshots of friends, music and cats from the NPEAKER (2000) collection. Other pictures are from the 3-part “Ke-no-hi Hyohaku” and the abstract work, NALI, which captures photograph of sound. In addition, there are recent portraits and many pictures from a time series.
